Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin is asking supporters to donate to her campaign for State Controller.

In an email sent on May 17 , Swearengin encouraged her supporters to help her meet an upcoming campaign finance reporting deadline.

“Tonight is an important deadline and I would appreciate your help in reaching our next financial goal so we can maintain and continue to build our momentum and promote my plan to revitalize California’s economy,” Swearengin wrote over the weekend. “I know we are going to deliver a strong finish in the primary.”

Swearengin’s Ongoing Lawsuit Against Taxpayers

Swearengin’s campaign has received financial support from real estate developers and trash companies that do business in the City of Fresno. The average taxpayer in Fresno likely can’t afford a contribution to Swearengin’s campaign for California Controller.

Last year, Swearengin pushed a controversial plan to double water rates in the city and some unincorporated parts of Fresno County. A group of taxpayers, led by former Fresno County Supervisor Doug Vagim, tried to circulate a petition to overturn the water rate hikes, but were denied a title and summary. Then, the city sued the taxpayers in an effort to stall the petition from reaching the 2014 ballot.

In addition to her support for fee increases, Swearengin has been criticized for conducting government business behind closed doors. In 2013, the Fresno mayor participated in the search for a new president of Fresno State University that was described by her hometown paper as “a shameful poke in the eye to all who believe in transparent government.”

Subject: Have You Heard?

As you’ve likely heard, today is one of our last financial deadlines before the June 3rd primary. You may have also heard this past week we received the sole endorsement of the Los Angeles Times as well as the recommendation of eight newspapers from the Los Angeles News Group. Our campaign has picked up incredible momentum.

Tonight is an important deadline and I would appreciate your help in reaching our next financial goal so we can maintain and continue to build our momentum and promote my plan to revitalize California’s economy.

Would you go online and make a donation to the campaign today?

I know we are going to deliver a strong finish in the primary. Your support as I work to become the next State Controller – so I may begin working to reinvigorate and restore California’s economy – is deeply appreciated.

It is because of friends like you that this is possible.

Thank you,
Ashley Swearengin
